gel electrophoresis

Proteins Found in Fetal Pig Organs

Students will be investigating the proteins that are found in different types of tissues from their dissection of the fetal pig.  This will end the unit on the dissection of the fetal pig, but transition into the unit on tissues. The use of gel electrophoresis will enable the students to determine which proteins are found in different tissues. Read more about Proteins Found in Fetal Pig Organs

Determining Relationships in Families using Gel Electrophoresis

A daughter thinks she’s adopted and wants to determine if her parents are her biological parents.  Students discover how gel electrophoresis is used to help the daughter determine if she is adopted or not.  In addition, students apply previously learned material (pedigree, Punnett square, etc.) to help understand the process and content.  Read more about Determining Relationships in Families using Gel Electrophoresis

A Student-Centered Guide to Bioengineering

Online activities, videos, and hands-on labs allow students to visualize and practice bioengineering techniques and concepts in this week-long unit.  Students will learn about DNA extraction, restriction enzymes, gel electrophoresis, PCR, and DNA sequencing by answering a series of questions based on videos, diagrams, and prior knowledge. Bacteria Primer Comparison 2: Gel Electrophoresis

This lesson will occur after a lesson in which the students will isolate bacterial DNA by using primers and PCR. In this lesson, each student will be able to accept or reject his or her hypothesis by completing gel electrophoresis of the PCR product and analyzing the results compared to the other bacterial primer products and a ladder.   Read more about Bacteria Primer Comparison 2: Gel Electrophoresis

Who Dunnit? The Case of the Missing Laptop

The Case of the Missing Laptop is designed to be used as a unit.  It begins with a story about a petty high school crime and some DNA evidence found at the crime scene.  Students are taken through a problem-solving process as they learn techniques that would help them assess the DNA evidence from the crime scene to identify the perpetrator. Modes of DNA Analysis: Extraction, Electrophoresis, PCR, and Microarray

Students will develop an understanding of available technologies that assist in analyzing DNA. Students will work virtually though the processes of DNA extraction, PCR, Gel electrophoresis, and DNA microarrays. Virtual extraction and electrophoresis labs will be used to show students the process before they actually do the process themselves.
