OMIM......Oh My: Using The Online Mendalian Inheritance and Man Database

Overview & Concepts

This activity is designed to introduce students to The Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) database.  Students will start by analyzing a patient's symptoms and correctly identifying the genetic disorder that is causing the problem.  Finally, the student will use OMIM to gather information about that specific genetic disorder.

Prior Knowledge Required: 

This activity requires knowledge of DNA, genes, protein synthesis and human genetics.  Basic computer skills are also required.

Teaching Tips / Activity Overview: 

Day 1:

  1. Introduce the students to OMIM using the OMIM Tutorial

Day 2:

  1. Students will work in pairs and use OMIM to diagnose and learn more about a particular genetic disorder Using Part I and II of Using OMIM for Medical Problem Solving.  Students should finish for homework.

Assessment: 

Ask questions to monitor student understanding.
