Medical Problem Solving using OMIM

In this case study activity, students read about a disease in the Mennonite population and learn more about the disorder using OMIM.  Students will also be introduced to SNP analysis to visualize how the gene that is causing a disorder is found.  Students will also get the opportunity to see how mutations can be determined and the effect of these mutations. OMIM......Oh My: Using The Online Mendalian Inheritance and Man Database

This activity is designed to introduce students to The Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) database.  Students will start by analyzing a patient's symptoms and correctly identifying the genetic disorder that is causing the problem.  Finally, the student will use OMIM to gather information about that specific genetic disorder. Molecular Sequences & Primate Evolution: An Amino Acid Example

In this activity students will used macromolecular data to construct a cladogram of 7 primate species and 1 non-primate species.  This will convey to students the idea that monophyleticism in both the recent and the more distant past can be inferred from macromolecular data. Students will compare and analyze amino acid sequences using NCBI’s BLAST tool. Read more about Molecular Sequences & Primate Evolution: An Amino Acid Example
